About Naturopathy

Naturopathic Medicine Frequently Asked and Answered Questions (FAQs) provide detailed answers to a wide variety of consumer questions for a prospective patient of Naturopathic Medicine. A brief overview is included here for your convenience.

What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic Medicine is a unique practice of medicine that emphasizes prevention and promotion of self-healing (and education of patients) with an individualized patient centered approach.

Naturopathic Medicine is based on the following foundational principles:

  1. Do no harm
  2. Harness the healing power of nature
  3. Find the cause
  4. Treat the whole person
  5. Prescribe preventive medicine
  6. Be a doctor and a teacher

What is a Naturopathic Doctor?

As of 2025 a naturopathic doctor (ND) is licensed to practice as a primary care physician in 23 American states, the district of Columbia, the US territories of Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, and in 5 Canadian states.

NDs aim to treat underlying causes and seek opportunities to allow the body and immune system to self-heal with minimalistic intervention. NDs educate and inspire patients to take charge of their health. In Washington State NDs are authorized to prescribe legend drugs as well.

Apart from being primary care physicians, NDs can also work together with other physicians to provide coordinated care. This integrative patient-centric approach allows patients to get the best of both sides rather than having to choose between one physician or one treatment over the other.
